Why Liberia?
Why Women and Girls?
In 2016, Liberia ranked 114 out of 144 on the Gender Inequality index
Like many places around the world, women in Liberia have less access to education, health care, property, and justice in comparison to men. Furthermore, they face obstacles to education such as teenage pregnancy, traditions such as early marriage, poverty, peer pressure, and female dis-empowerment among others. Rebound Liberia supports young women to combat these challenges. We don’t neglect men, rather uplift women so they can write their own stories.

Why Basketball?
Basketball is on the rise in Africa. Rebound Liberia uses basketball as a tool to address gender inequality and as a social gathering place that reinforces family stability, leadership, cooperation, discipline and a culture of mentorship in post conflict Liberia.
Studies show that sports can offer an opportunity for girls to learn valuable skills such as cooperation, leadership, self-determination, as well as help to build mental and emotional health and toughness. These skills also complement what the participants learn at the personal development workshops.
“Instead of doing nothing during the vacation time, I really encourage more girls to sign up for the program if it were to return next year because it was truly beneficial.”
— Kindness Kwanwah, Summer 2018 Participant
